Cut from sardonyx, a banded agate that reveals its colors as it’s carved — the darker layer shaping his portrait, the paler ground keeping him properly dignified. Set in gold-fill, with copper beginning to peek through after a century of wear. On the reverse, the best surprise: 7.26.80, engraved like a quiet clue. The hand-cut letters, the style of the font, and the American way of writing the date all point us to 1880 America.
